• The European Senior Tour is now in its 18th season and continues to break new ground, with some of the game’s most iconic names, including Ryder Cup winning Captains Bernhard Langer,
Sam Torrance and Ian Woosnam, all continuing their illustrious careers into their 50s and beyond.
Now comprising a schedule of 16 tournaments in 11 destinations over ten months, the Senior Tour
is renowned for its relaxed yet competitive environment.
The success of the inaugural Senior Open Championship in 1987, when Neil Coles defeated five
former Open Champions to capture the title, led to more than 60 professionals calling for a formal
European Senior Tour structure to be launched two years later.
South African John Fourie won the first John Jacobs Trophy, presented to the leading Senior Tour
player, in 1992 and since then the Senior Tour has made swift progress in one of the most impressive
success stories in the 20th century’s final decade of sport.
In 2003, The Senior Open Championship was officially recognised as a “Senior Major”, incorporated
into the European Senior Tour and US Champions Tour schedules, while under the administration
of Managing Director Andy Stubbs, the Senior Tour visits three different continents and continues
to visit new destinations each year.
The 2008 European Senior Tour schedule saw events played at some of the most renowned venues
in golf including Royal Troon, Woburn and Ballyliffin, with Sunningdale and Carnoustie due to host
The Senior Open Championship in 2009 and 2010 respectively.
The European Senior Tour has rightly been labelled the ‘Friendly Tour’ by both its Members and
supporting Patrons alike, with former Ryder Cup players and Captains, Major Champions and
European Tour winners entertaining crowds eager to see some of the game’s legendary names.
The Senior Tour also provides a unique platform for business development opportunities which
includes the delivery of increased brand awareness through national and international media
coverage, the opportunity to entertain key or prospective clients through the Pro-Am experience
and the ability to invite clients to watch the tournament action and enjoy corporate hospitality. |
