Sam’s the main man for Ferguson Jones team

Ryder Cup veteran Sam Torrance found himself in a familiar position on Wednesday after the second and final round of the Constance Hotels Pro-Am at Constance Belle Mare Plage.

The 56-year-old Scot, a multi-title winner on both the main PGA European Tour and the Senior Tour, joined forces with the Ferguson Jones team and helped them to top the leaderboard in the Gross Section of the competition. Martyn, Sally and Marcus Ferguson Jones went into their second round at the Legend course as overnight leaders after enjoying the company of Zimbabwe’s Mike Williams on Day 1.

And under Torrance’s stewardship, they maintained their advantage, adding a further 74 points for a total of 157, two more than runners-up Marcel Gris, Claude Gris and Stephane Binazet, who were aided by the Spaniard, Juan Quiros, in scoring 75 points in their second round, also at the Legend. Best gross score of the day at the Legend was 78 by the Marc Farry-led team of Raoul Gufflet, Robert Espitalier Noel and Andrew Steward, while three teams shared a top score of 75 at the Links.

There was a tighter finish to the Net Section of the Pro-Am, with only a single point separating the first two positions. Narrowly taking the main honours, with 181 points, were Loic Bax, Luc Bax and Guy Adam, who moved up from joint second overnight following a successful first day with South African John Bland.

For Day 2, they were partnered by Mike Cunning, of the USA, in accumulating 89 points at the Links, one more than runners-up Jasmine Alfeld, Christian Gnotke and Elsa Tanyar, who had David Frost as their professional, again at the Links. Frost’s South African compatriot, Hugh Baiocchi, had another fine round, helping his team of Didier De Speville, Yannick Lagesse, and Francois Du Mee to the day’s best net score of 94 at the Links. Top net score at the Legend was 88 from teams led by Englishmen Kevin Spurgeon and Mitch Kierstenson.
